Join us as we kickoff our 2018 annual convention with a golf outing on Sunday, July 29th at noon at Trappers Turn. The cost is $95 which includes 18 holes, a cart and access to the range. You are on your own for lunch. Bring your spouse or significant other – all are welcome to play!

Sunday evening we will host a buffet dinner with a cash bar. Afterwards join us in the hospitality room.

Monday’s seminar features US Department of Labor, WI Department of Revenue, and Ethics on Ethical Implications of Social Media on The Accountant. Our annual meeting will be held at 3:00 pm.

MONDAY – JULY 30, 2018

US DEPARTMENT OF LABOR – MARY OPPLIGER
This seminar will provide you with a working knowledge of federal wage and hours laws that will allow you to better serve clients.

Mary Oppliger has been with the US Department of Labor, Wage Hour Division since 2008. As a senior investigator, she has conducted hundreds of cases under several laws enforced by DOL-WHD including the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, Davis-Bacon and Related Acts and the Service Contract Act. During the course of her career, Mary has conducted federal training sessions for a wide range of employment industries on wage and hour topics ranging from minimum wage and overtime to meal break issues and the requirements for overtime exemptions. Mary continues to be a lead trainer on federal wage and hour issues for the entire State of Wisconsin.

WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE – VICKI GIBBONS AND LISA HARTZ

This seminar will discuss income reconstruction audits, what to expect in a sales and use tax audit and a sales and use tax updates. Vicki Gibbons is Deputy Administrator of the Department of Revenue’s Income, Sales and Excise Tax Division. She is primarily responsible for overseeing division operations focusing on customer service, audit and technology. Prior to becoming Deputy, she was the Audit Bureau Director, a sales tax specialist with the department’s Administration Technical Services Unit in Madison, and a field auditor. Ms. Gibbons has been employed by the department since 1983. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Lisa Hartz is an Income Reconstruction Unit Supervisor in the Audit Bureau of the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Lisa has been with the department since 2001 and was an individual income tax auditor, district field auditor and a field audit reviewer prior to becoming a supervisor in 2015. She has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Accounting and minor
in Business Administration from UW-Platteville.

Kyle S. Skala, J.D., Associate Attorney practices primarily in the areas of income taxation, gift and estate taxation, estate planning and commercial law. His experience has included estate planning, business and corporate law and commercial real estate law. He has completed numerous commercial real estate transactions and is experienced with estate planning and corporate structuring to minimize tax consequences for high net worth individuals. Previously, Mr. Skala was responsible for auditing and recreating corporate accounting records in preparation for year-end tax returns and IRS audits as well as drafting forensic accounting reports. Mr. Skala earned a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Marquette University before attending Chicago-Kent School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor and Business Law Certification. While in law school, he was a student attorney at the school’s tax clinic where he assisted corporations and individuals in tax planning and minimizing tax liabilities. He also received CALI award honors for the highest grade in Federal Estate and Gift Tax as well as Criminal Law. Mr. Skala served in a leadership role as the president of the Student Humanitarian Network where he led volunteer groups to provide legal assistance in the office of public aid. Mr. Skala is licensed to practice law in Illinois and is a member of the Illinois Bar Association and Chicago Bar Association. He has spoken on S-corporation and Partnership mergers as well as on foreign entities doing business in the United States.

Michael D. Whitty, C.F.P., J.D., Partner concentrates his practice in estate planning, taxation, and estate and trust administration. Mr. Whitty represents business owners, principals of venture capital and private equity funds, key executives, investors and other high-net-worth individuals in planning for the preservation and transfer of their wealth. Specifically, he advises individuals and fiduciaries in the design and drafting of estate plans, wills, trusts, lifetime gifts, premarital agreements and other estate planning documents. Mr. Whitty has extensive experience with various types of trusts, family limited partnerships, corporate recapitalizations, shareholders’ and redemption agreements, private annuities, installment sales, intra-trust sales and other transactions, self-canceling installment notes and net gifts. He also reviews and manages estate and gift tax returns, including complex reporting and valuation issues. Mr. Whitty consults with executors, administrators, guardians and trustees in probate and trust administration. He supervises the drafting of estate administration documents and the filing of pleadings, motions and accountings with probate courts. He also advises clients in connection with litigation involving disputes between trustees and beneficiaries and in contested trust and tax matters, and he has served as an expert witness in such cases. Mr. Whitty is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a Fellow of the Family Firm Institute (holding certificates in Family Wealth Advising and Family Business Advising), a member of the Attorneys for Family-Held Enterprises and a member of the Chicago Estate Planning Council. He was an active member in the American Bar Association through August of 2013, in which he served on the Section Council and as Chair of the Wealth Planning and Nontax Issues Group of the Probate and Trust Division in the Section of Real Property, Probate and Trust Law. Mr. Whitty served for three years as an adjunct professor at the Northwestern University School of Law, teaching a course titled “Federal Estate and Gift Taxation and Estate Planning.” He is a Certified Financial Planning practitioner and a member of the Financial Planning Association of Illinois. Mr. Whitty has been named to Illinois Super Lawyers and Illinois Leading Lawyers. He also received and “AV Preeminent” Peer Rating in Martindal-Hubbell. Mr. Whitty is a frequent speaker on estate and financial planning topics, appeared on the PBS program Nightly Business Report and on WGN Chicago, and has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal. Mr. Whitty earned a BBA (1983) and J.D. (1988) from the University of Texas at Austin.

Eric E. Kalnins, J.D., LL.M., Partner practices primarily in the areas of business structuring, tax (domestic and international) and estate planning with an emphasis in the family office market. He is also experienced in the creation and implementation of advanced estate planning techniques for high net-worth clients including the formation and operation of family limited liability companies and the family office structure. In addition, Mr. Kalnins is actively involved in the Firm’s asset protection practice that consists in part of the planning and implementation of domestic and offshore entities and trusts. Mr. Kalnins is a licensed attorney in Illinois, Wisconsin and Arizona, and he is currently a member of the State Bar of Illinois, the trail bar for the Northern Federal District Court of Illinois, and the United States Tax Court, as well as the State Bar of Arizona and Wisconsin. His litigation experience greatly compliments the Firm’s tax controversy work at all stages of audit, appeals and Tax Court proceedings. Mr. Kalnins was chosen to represent our firm at the Family Wealth Alliance’s 40 minus Leadership Summit on March 4-5, 2009, in Boston, Massachusetts, hosted by State Street Corporation. This event represents a family office/family wealth industry first, acknowledging the significant contributions made by professionals 40 years of age or under from a select number of firms that represent a 360-degree view of this robust space. Mr. Kalnins’ experience in each of the aforementioned practice areas has enabled him to proactively identify and capitalize on business and personal planning opportunities for the benefit of Firm clients. Mr. Kalnins obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, a Juris Doctor degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing Michigan, and a Master of Laws in Taxation Degree (LL.M. in Tax) from DePaul University College of Law in Chicago, Illinois. He is also a member of the Chicago Bar Association (Chair of Federal Tax Committee), Society of Trust and Estate Pracitioners (STEP), Governing Member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and member of the Chicago Yacht Club. Michael N. Ripani, C.P.A., C.F.E., J.D., Senior Counsel for the Commerical Practice Group at Handler Thayer LLP focusing on business and corporate transactions and litigation. He has a unique blend of legal and business experience as a lawyer and a Certified Public Accountant representing public and private corporations in order to develop creative business salutations. Mr. Ripani is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Fraud Examiner. His current areas of practice include:

Prior to becoming an attorney, Mr. Ripani was an auditor for an international accounting firm where he test financial statement balances and evaluated the financial statements for appropriate disclosures under applicable accounting principles and SEC regulations. He also tested systems of internal accounting controls and developed recommendations for improvement of those systems. Mr. Ripani attended the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana College of Commerce and Business Administration where he graduated with high honors receiving his Bachelors of Science in Accountancy. He then graduated with honors from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor. He was also a member of the Kent Law Review. Mr. Ripani is currently a Trustee for the Village of Hinsdale, Committee Chair for Hinsdale Boy Scout Troop 10 and the Communications Director and Steering Committee Member for the St. Isaac Jogues Men’s Group. Previously, he was a member of the Hinsdale Central High School Reading Rocks Committee, Assistant Cubmaster and Den Leader for Hinsdale Cub Scout Pack 10, member of the Village of Hinsdale Zoning Board for Appeals and Village of LaGrange Economic Development Advisory Commission, Head Coach for Hinsdale American Youth Soccer Organization girls and boys team and an advisor for Junior Achievement of Chicago. He is also a member of the Chicago Bar Association, Illinois CPA Society, Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, including the Chicago Chapter of that organization.
